What You Need to Know for Hurricane Season: What all Pool Owners Need to Know When a Hurricane Strikes
Before the hurricane:
- Add additional chlorine to your swimming pool. This will help prepare your pool for the abundance of rain your pool may acquire. The rainwater can cause a negative impact on your pool’s water chemistry.
- Do not drain your swimming pool before the storm! It may seem like the correct thing, but the abundance of rain paired with an empty pool can cause the water table to rise. This will result in a concrete pool to rise and pop out from the ground.
- Do not put a cover on your swimming pool. This may cause severe damage.
- Be sure to put away anything that is not secured to the deck. Make sure to store all poolside furniture, floats, etc. in a safe space. High winds due to the hurricane can potentially turn those loose objects into flying projectiles that can or may damage anything it hits or may cause serious injuries to someone if hit.
- Turn off all electrical components of your swimming pool equipment. This will help stop power surges from damaging equipment. This may also protect the equipment if your property is flooded.
After the hurricane:
- Once your power has been restored, if you lost power, you may turn the equipment back on. Make sure all equipment is dry as well.
- If your pool has an excess amount of water in it, drain it from your swimming pool down to mid tile line so that your skimmer can help clean the surface of the pool.
- You will want to net out the debris in the pool. It is important to brush the pool walls and floor which again will help circulate the water.
